The Hermit Of Street 1898 edition by Anna Katharine Green Reference eBooks
This long story/short novel of 49 pages in the printed version was first published in 1898 and is in the public domain. This story can be read in an hour or so. Anna Katherine Green lived from 1846-1935, she was an American novellist and poet, best known for her mysteries. A lot of her works can be found as free e-books on the web.In this story a young girl, Delight Hunter, meets a mysterious hermit (Humphrey Addison) and falls head over heels in love with him. But there is a black cloud hanging around him. Why does he live in a house that is partly boarded up, why are some of the rooms closed and off-limits, why does he dissappear for an hour every evening? This story reminded me a bit of Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë, so if you liked that novel, or if you like stories with a combination of a romance and a mystery in it, I would recommend giving this story a try. It starts a bit slow, but after a few pages the pace picks up.
As a samle I copy a few sentences from the first chapter below:
[...]
I could hardly formulate words in my own mind. A great love and a great dread had
seized upon me at once. A great love for the man by whose face I had
been moved for weeks and a great dread--well, I cannot explain my
dread, not as I felt it that night. It was formless and without apparent
foundation; but it would no more leave me than my uneasy memory of the
fierce instinct which had led him at such a critical instant to close
his door against all help, though in so doing he had subjected a young
girl to many minutes of intense embarrassment and mortifying indecision.
